Marion Manley 1893 1984 was Miami s first female architect and successfully maintained an independent architectural practice in south Florida over much of the twentieth century In this first comprehensive illustrated work on Manley Catherine Lynn and Carie Penabad explore the relationship of Manley s work to her life and to the broader historical moment of which she was a part including the overall development of the city of Miami The book catalogs all of Manley s known work includes images and plans where available and provides detailed examinations of what the authors consider to be her best most emblematic work in each phase of her long career Best known as one of the designers of the innovative University of Miami campus built just after the Second World War Manley worked on other public buildings that are less well known including an addition to the John Ringling Museum in Sarasota Her residential work is interesting as well modest and rational with careful consideration of regional characteristics and construction appropriate to the south Florida landscape As noted architect Elizabeth Plater Zyberk remarks in her foreword Understanding the reduced circumstances of the provenance of these buildings and their low technology characteristics such as rooms with cross ventilation large areas of shaded glass and the almost tactile relationship to the adjacent landscape we must admire the legacy of Marion Manley

Fool s Paradise Players Poseurs and the Culture of Excess in South Beach

From the acclaimed bestselling author of Philistines at the Hedgerow comes a remarkably revealing profile of the Miami Beach no one knows a tale of fabulous excess thwarted power and rekindled lives that will take its place among the decade s best works of social portraiture Created from a mix of swampland and dredged up barrier reef Miami Beach has always been one part drifter mecca and one part fantasyland simultaneously a catch basin for con men fast talk artists and shameless self promoters and a Shangri La for sun worshippers and hardcore hedonists In Miami Beach it s often said that if you re not indicted you re not invited But the city s mad fascinating complexity resists easy stereotyping Fool s Paradise is more than just a present day profile of a dark Eden Gaines journeys back into the city s social and cultural history unearthing stories of the resort s past that are every bit as absorbing and jaw dropping as those of its present The book begins with a snapshot of the city s current excess this is after all a sun washed hamlet that boasts on a per capita basis more bars and breast implants than any other place in America then plunges into the Beach s origins chronicling the audacious rise of such hoteliers as the Fontainebleau s Ben Novack and the Eden Roc s Harry Mufson the sharp elbowed tactics of Al Capone and Frank Sinatra and the Mac 10 shooting sprees of the Marielito and Colombian drug lords From there the narrative shifts to two wildly eccentric souls who gave their lives to preserving the city s architectural dazzle and creating its color palette introduces us to the Most Powerful Man in Miami Beach and arrives finally in the modern day where we meet among others a kinky German playboy who once owned a quarter of South Beach and publicly flaunts his sexual escapades a fabulously successful nightclub promoter whose addictive past seems to have given him a portal into the night world s id and a gaggle of young sexy models dreamers and schemers on a mission to achieve significance Evoking the Beach s surreal blend of flashy Vegas and old Hollywood glamour as well as its manic desperation and reckless wealth Gaines persuasively demonstrates that though the Beach is in the words of its most famous drag queen an island of broken toys a place where people get away with things they d never get away with anyplace else it casts an irresistible spell From the Hardcover edition

Readers must wade through the first 175 pages to reach material about the current South Beach and then we finally hear about the party promoters and the clubs that rule the beach today and in the recent past Before that it s a lot of ancient history about such topics as the Fountainblue Hotel but nothing about its recent redevelopment as the party mecca of the beach This book gets off to a very slow start but those who stick with it will be rewarded by capsule looks at such key figures as Barbar...

I ve read numerous expose accounts of South Beach and this one only updates what has been previously written Focuses on the colorful characters but little insight about Miami Beach s history politics and culture Anyone reading this should keep in mind that South Beach is not Miami Beach is Not Miami is not South Florida is not Florida Also this totally ignores the other history of South Florida and Miami Beach the one told from the point of view of the many immigrants and refugees who have made...

Fool s Paradise is a well written book about the hidden history of Miami Beach I especially enjoyed Chapter Eleven The Mayor of South Beach After finishing Steven Gaine s manuscript where he mentions Mayor Alex Daoud and his unexpurgated book Sins of South Beach The True Story of Violence Corruption Murder and the Making of Miami Beach I purchased the Mayor s story All I can say is WOW The author a three time Miami Beach City Commissioner and former three time Mayor uses real names real crimes a...

I was looking forward to reading this book having spent many years in Miami and Miami Beach but I was extremely disappointed in it There is nothing new here the same old stories that appeared in the Miami Herald Miami New Times and other publications are just rehashed Boring and dull

For decades Miami Beach has provided an escape for snowbirds to get away from the cold of winter for gangsters a place to get things done without much interference for beautiful people a place to show off with few inhibitions Steven Gaines captures these and more in his book Fool s Paradise Players Poseurs and the Culture of Excess in South Beach Gaines tells the story of the hoteliers the Art Deco preservationists the nightclub operators gangsters druggies models and politicians Fool s Paradise...

Ditch of Dreams The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida s Future Florida History and Culture

Traces the long standing effort to build a canal across Florida Offers timeless lessons about pork barrel politics and the power of citizen environmentalism Most important it reminds us that today s economic coup may well be tomorrow s environmental crisis Cynthia Barnett author of Mirage Ties the exploitation of the Ocklawaha to Florida history across nearly two centuries Moreover they bring to life the personalities of canal supporters and detractors including such dynamic individuals as Franklin Delano Roosevelt Claude Pepper and Marjorie Harris Carr Frederick Rowe Davis author of The Man Who Saved Sea Turtles For centuries men dreamed of cutting a canal across the Florida peninsula Intended to reduce shipping times it was championed in the early twentieth century as a way to make the mostly rural state a center of national commerce and trade Rejected by the Army Corps of Engineers as not worthy the project received continued support from Florida legislators Federal funding was eventually allocated and work began in the 1930s but the canal quickly became a lightning rod for controversy Steven Noll and David Tegeder trace the twists and turns of the project through the years drawing on a wealth of archival and primary sources Far from being a simplistic morality tale of good environmentalists versus evil canal developers the story of the Cross Florida Barge Canal is a complex one of competing interests amid the changing political landscape of modern Florida Thanks to the unprecedented success of environmental citizen activists construction was halted in 1971 though it took another twenty years for the project to be canceled Though the land intended for the canal was deeded to the state and converted into the Cross Florida Greenway certain aspects of the dispute including the fate of Rodman Reservoir have yet to be resolved

The book is a detailed documentary of the history of the Cross Florida Barge Canal The surprising thing to me was that it wasnt a recent thing It actually began during the days of the Spanish explorers several hundred years ago The book chronicles how a small group of passionate citizens can ultimately defeat big government through persistence and facts I would not rate the book as entertaining but is more like a textbook But it is a very good history of this project

Steven Noll David Tegeder did a great job in this new book I live in Ocala and have a vaction home in Crystal River which is a few miles from the completed western section of the barge Canal Inglis Florida Ocala has the Ocklawaha river which I have been on many times which was the main contention the enviromentalist fought the canal over I have also fished on the Rodman reservoir and have been to Palatka Santos and many of the places listed in the book so it was great to read the history about t...

Laurex Laptop Notebook Backpack Black Tattoo fits up to a 17 laptop

When the Civil War finally came to North Florida it did so with an intermittent fury that destroyed much of Jacksonville and scattered its residents The city was taken four separate times by Federal forces but abandoned after each of the first three occupations During the fourth occupation it was used as a staging ground for the ill fated Union invasion of the Florida interior which ended in the bloody Battle of Olustee in February 1864 This late Confederate victory along with the deadly use of underwater mines against the U S Navy along the St Johns nearly succeeded in ending the fourth Union occupation of Jacksonville Writing in clear engaging prose Daniel Schafer sheds light on this oft forgotten theatre of war and details the dynamic racial and cultural factors that led to Florida s engagement on behalf of the South He investigates how fears about the black population increased and held sway over whites seeking out the true motives behind both the state and federal initiatives that drove freed blacks from the cities back to the plantations even before the war s end From the Missouri Compromise to Reconstruction Thunder on the River offers the history of a city and a region precariously situated as a major center of commerce on the brink of frontier Florida Historians and Civil War aficionados alike will not want to miss this important addition to the literature
